IFP concerned about Housing corruption

MEDIA STATEMENT RELEASED BY:
MR BONGINKOSI DHLAMINI MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON HOUSING

September 15, 2006

The IFP spokesperson on Housing, Mr Bonginkosi Dhlamini, today said:
"The IFP notes the Auditor-General's report regarding the approval and allocation of housing subsidies by the Western Cape Department of Housing tabled in the Western Cape Provincial Legislature. We are particularly concerned about the reported 572 recipients who are government employees."

"The IFP is appalled at the situation where the poor is being illegally crowded-out by public servants who have an income to support their families and housing expenses. Also, the IFP is interested to know if the Auditor-General's report reveals if any of the 572 government-employed recipients are provincial Department of Housing employees."

Mr Dhlamini concluded by saying: "If the report reveals that some of these 572 recipients are indeed Department of Housing employees, we urge the Department to not only improve their administrative processes, but also to take steps in uncovering the levels of corruption within the Department."
