IFP calls for more drug testing in PSL
MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY:
MR ERIC LUCAS MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON FOR SPORT & RECREATION
November 15, 2006
The IFP spokesperson for Sport & Recreation, Eric Lucas, today
said:
"The IFP seconds the call made by Mr Trevor Phillips, the chief
executive of the PSL, for an increase in the frequency of drug
tests in the PSL. We further believe that testing of players
should take place in and out of season, and that testing for
banned substances should be done across the board - meaning that
testing should be done for performance enhancers, as well as
recreational drugs."
"The IFP believes that frequent, year through testing will curb
drug taking within the PSL and help solve the problem before
2010. We are appalled at the reports of two PSL players being
tested positive for a banned substance and welcome the six month
automatic ban imposed on them. The IFP hopes that the punishment
handed down to these players will send a message to the rest
that irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated."
Eric concluded by saying: "These players are professionals and
should realise that they have a responsibility of being role
models to young up and coming players."
