The IFP is demonstrating its resolve to
blow the whistle on corruption.
We unequivocally condemn the astronomical
bonuses, severance packages and golden handshakes that have been
awarded to some Municipal Managers and will be seeking
explanations from the Mayors of IFP-controlled municipalities to
ensure that correct procedures were followed in awarding
bonuses.
We will also be carefully scrutinising
performance contracts awarded to see if they are deserved.
The IFP says that undeserved performance
bonuses amount to corruption.
The clear guidelines of the pledge signed
by IFP councillors yesterday will prevent this kind of greed and
opportunism in the next five year term of government in IFP-led
municipalities.
The IFP leadership will also be requiring
all its Mayors to provide lists of councillors who are in
arrears with their rates. Any delinquent candidates will be
required to make satisfactory arrangements with their municipal
managers to pay all outstanding amounts within twelve months of
their office. If they fail to do so, they will be expelled.
We have also heard reports that two
serving IFP councillors, Mr ME Khumalo and NE Ndaba, who have
not been nominated to contest the 2006 election by the Party in
the Emnambithi municipality, are now actively canvassing for
NADECO. This is the latest example of political opportunism.
This is careerism, not public service.
