IFP WOMEN'S BRIGADE BACKS BUTHELEZI'S CALL FOR CAMPAIGN AGAINST
ALCOHOL ABUSE AND FOR MORAL REGENERATION

ULUNDI : OCTOBER 16, 2002

The Chairperson of the IFP Women's Brigade, Mrs Abbie Mchunu, has backed the call by IFP president and Home Affairs Minister, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, in his call for a nationwide campaign to address alcohol abuse.

Mrs Mchunu said that such a campaign should be part of a wider moral regeneration campaign, which was necessary to prevent the disintegration of South Africa's society and communities.

Mrs Mchunu said:

"The IFP Women's Brigade wholeheartedly welcomes Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi 's call for a nationwide campaign to address alcohol abuse. The victims of alcohol abuse are the most vulnerable: women and children."

"This organisation is prepared to play a role in such a campaign. "It is clear that alcohol abuse, child rape and physical abuse are symptomatic of the underlying causes of poverty, despair and human degradation."

"We believe that South Africa is teetering on the edge of a moral abyss and nothing less than a national 'Revolution of Goodwill' will prevent us sliding over the edge."

"There is an urgent to inculcate in all our people a spirit of Ubuntu and responsibility."

"Government hand-in-hand with civil society must immediately embark upon a campaign of moral regeneration, backed up with appropriate resources, to turn the tide against abuse of all kinds".
