IFP calls for show of solidarity for flood victims

DURBAN : NOVEMBER 16, 1999

In the wake of the severe storms and the consequent loss of life in Howick yesterday, the Inkatha Freedom Party offered its sympathy to the families and friends of those who had died, families of those still missing and to all who have been left homeless.

Mr. Mandla Malakoana, MPP, said from Durban today: "The IFP is aware of the pain and suffering that comes from losing loved ones. We are thinking and praying for all those who are in mourning. God bless you and comfort you in this time of bereavement."

Mr. Gwala, MPP, joined Mr. Malakoana in offering condolences to the victims. He said: "Once the waters have subsided the majority of the people of the area will be homeless. It is terribly sad that in disasters such as these the poorest of the poor are often the hardest hit. I call on all the citizens of KwaZulu-Natal to express their solidarity with the victims by extending whatever help is necessary."

Mr. Gwala praised the office for provincial disaster management as well as the Red Cross for their prompt action in supplying food and blankets to destitute families.
