The IFP extends its heartfelt
condolences to the families of the 11 casualties of the SA
Roadlink bus which crashed in Hibberdene this morning and urges
the KwaZulu Natal MEC for Transport Bheki Cele to work harder to
prevent road accidents, especially ahead of the holiday season.
"The MEC for Transport, to his credit,
is quick to express condolences to the families of casualties of
road accidents across KwaZulu Natal. He is not quite so quick to
work harder to prevent these accidents," said IFP spokesperson
on transport Sipho Mbatha.
The IFP is tired of the numerous
government initiatives aimed at boosting road safety which too
often yield inadequate results. "The truth is that most
initiatives aimed at screening the roadworthiness of vehicles do
not produce expected results," said Mbatha.
The IFP finds outrageous the MEC's
criticism levelled against SA Roadlink to the effect that the
private company is spending more on advertising than on safety
of passengers. "This is rich coming from the MEC for Transport
whose government is spending vast amounts of the taxpayer money
on self-promotion at the expense of service delivery," said
Mbatha.
