IFP APPLAUDS US TRAINING OF SCORPIONS

CAPE TOWN : MARCH 17, 2000

The reported US-sponsored programme to train Scorpions is very heartening, Inkatha Freedom Party said today in a statement. The party was reacting to the announcement which the US Ambassador to South Africa, Mr Delano E. Lewis made on Wednesday at the official opening of the MTN Centre for Crime Prevention Studies at Rhodes University.

The IFP Spokesperson on Safety and Security, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu said:

"The IFP welcomes any programme meant to strengthen our law-enforcement agencies to deal effectively with crime. The US government must be applauded for availing its expertise to our government. We applaud the Ministry of Safety and Security also for going out to ensure that our police officers are well-equipped for their challenging task."

" We urge the government to take another step forward by addressing the conditions of service of the SAPS, including resources. A satisfied police service is sure to produce good results for South Africa."
