KZN Health MEC Must Stand Aside

17th April 2008

The IFP has called on the KwaZulu Natal Premier JS Ndebele to suspend his MEC for Health, Peggy Nkonyeni, who is now under investigation for fraud by the Scorpions.

"Mismanagement, corruption and fraud have reached a new height in the investigation of an MEC. So far we have only seen the Scorpions tackle Mr Ndebele's Heads of Department. Fraud has clearly become endemic with this administration," said Leader of the Official Opposition in the province Dr Lionel Mtshali.

The IFP has also drawn a stark contrast between its period in government (1994-2004) which gave no cause for such high-profile investigations and that of the ANC post-2004.

"Mr Ndebele's Heads of Department are leaving his government in unprecedented numbers, often amid shady circumstances. Forensic audit reports into officials' misdeeds are being studiously withheld from public scrutiny. And, of course, the Scorpions have become a household name in the provincial government," said Dr Mtshali.
