IFP Protest March -
Street Renaming, Durban

IFP PRESS STATEMENT BY:
Mr Albert Mncwango
IFP National Organiser

17th June 2008

IFP National Organiser, Mr Albert Mncwango, today announced that the IFP will hold a protest march in Durban on Saturday, 21 June 2008, to protest against the street name changing in Durban and the belittling of the role of IFP President, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, in the liberation of South Africa.

The march will gather at Albert Park and start moving toward City Hall at 11h00 where a memorandum will be delivered to the Mayor of Durban at 13h00.

Mr Mncwango said, "The continued insistence of the ANC-led eThekwini Metro in willynilly changing street names in Durban to suit their political agenda and in most cases "honour heroes" who are unknown to the general public, smacks of arrogance and total disregard for the multi-party, multi-cultural composition of our beautiful city."

"We cannot just idly stand by and watch as they dismantle history and the contributions of various people, most notably that of IFP President, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, to the building of this city and the liberation of our nation, nor can we fold our hands when the painstaking process of reconciliation and nation building is being thwarted."

"We are going to march this Saturday to deliver a memorandum protesting our dismay at the continued arrogance and ignorance of the ANC-led eThekwini Metro.  We will not let it end there, we will continue our struggle to ensure that the rights of all South Africans are recognised.  We have struggled before and contributed to the liberation of our country in 1994 and we will continue to struggle to ensure that our nation is not turned into an Orwellian nightmare where some people are more equal than others."

"Most disturbing is the systematic and calculated campaign at undermining the role and contribution Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi in the struggle for liberation of our nation.  This campaign has taken on a personal tone, where it appears that some elements in the ANC will not rest until they have dismantled Prince Buthelezi's legacy,"   Mr Mncwango concluded.
