The IFP today condemned the extravagant spending
which is flourishing under the ANC-led administration in KwaZulu-Natal.
Dr Lionel Mtshali, leader of the IFP Parliamentary
Caucus said that excessive levels of spending on glitzy self-promoting
media advertising were diverting scarce resources from the people's
priorities of poverty alleviation, homelessness, hunger and rampant
unemployment.
Mtshali said that the ANC should govern with
frugality and prudent housekeeping, which it preaches in its expressed
commitments contained in its social contract with the poor.
Mtshali added that under his administration, a tight
lid was kept on spending on media advertising because the IFP always
prioritises the plight of the poor and the marginalised.
Mtshali said:
"The IFP, as a moral and constructive
opposition, condemns the wasteful spending of the ANC and warns that it
will not shirk from its mandate to keep the ANC to its promises."
"The ANC ignores the Public Finance
Management Act at its own peril. "
"The IFP shudders if this is the style and
manner with which Mr Ndebele intends to govern and fears that
KwaZulu-Natal could slide down the slippery slope and outpace its
neighbour, the badly run Eastern Cape province."
"The IFP and the electorate will be keeping a
watchful eye on this administration and are calling upon the Auditor
General's Office to intervene in this unwarranted and wasteful
expenditure".
