The Inkatha Freedom Party is outraged by Eskom's request to increase electricity by 53% and we will oppose the increase in any way possible.
The planned increases are shameful because once again it will hurt the poorest of the poor the most.
The blackouts and ridiculous excuses and contradicting statements of Eskom have destroyed all confidence in this organisation. Their latest blunder of advising the construction industry that they will not be supplied with licenses, or power, for future large developments, was the last straw.
Even the honourable President Mbeki had to step in to restore confidence and this while Eskom had the audacity to reward senior management with massive increases and bonuses.
The Eskom electricity charges are already set to increase by almost 24% after N.E.R.S.A. approved a 14.2% increase, whilst the Minister of Finance has announced a 2.2c levy per kw hour, for fossil charged energy generation, which in turn work out to almost a further 10% increase.
This 24% increase of Eskom is almost 17% above Government's own inflation targeting prescription. Now Eskom wants to take this travesty even further by applying for a 53% increase.
It is an absolute national disgrace.
