PRESS STATEMENT BY

367 731 VOTES CAST IN KWAZULU-NATAL OUTSIDE REGISTERED VOTER DISTRICTS
WITH INADEQUATE VERIFICATION PROCESS

Durban: April 19, 2004

The Inkatha Freedom Party expresses extreme concern that 367 731 voters cast their ballots in voter districts in KwaZulu-Natal where such voters were not registered on the voters roll for the particular districts.

The voting procedure for persons who cast their ballots at areas other than their registered voting districts is contemplated for persons who find themselves away from their registered voting districts for reasons including vacations.

A vast number of such votes were cast in areas that include Kokstad, Matatiele and Port Shepstone, in close proximity to the Easter Cape Province.

Of grave concern to the Inkatha Freedom Party is that insufficient verification procedures are in place to confirm the correctness of representations made by such voters as to their correct registered voting districts and their registration on the consolidated national and provincial voters rolls. Furthermore the verification that such voters had not voted elsewhere on election day is inadequate.

The Inkatha Freedom Party records that the African National Congress had hired buses which conveyed African National Congress supporters from one voting district to another and in some instances into the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.
