IFP Urges Speaker to Bring Serobe Motion Before the House

Inkatha Freedom Party Statement By:
MS SUZANNE VOS MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON COMMUNICATIONS

19 November 2007

Ms Suzanne Vos MP today requested the Speaker to allow a Motion which she moved on Thursday, 20 September 2007, to be brought before the House for decision.

This follows a letter written to the Speaker by Ms Gloria Tomatoe Serobe, dated 26 October 2007, and published by the Speaker in the ATC on 15 November 2007.

In this letter Ms Serobe attempts to explain whether at the time of her interview with the Portfolio Committee on Communications, she knew or did not know one Mr Louis J du Plooy who nominated her for a position on the SABC Board. It subsequently emerged that Mr du Plooy works in the Presidency.

In her interview before the Communications Committee, Ms Serobe denied knowing Mr du Plooy.  As appears from the verbatim transcript of the Committee meeting, the Chairperson, Mr G Oliphant MP, asked her:

"Who nominated you, Mr du Plooy?"

To which Ms Serobe answered:

"I actually don't know."

She later added:

"I never found out who that is."

Soon thereafter she said:

"It was very sweet of him. I must call him or her."

In her letter to the Speaker, Ms Serobe attempts to draw a distinction between "a Mr du Plooy of Groenkloof" and Mr Louis du Plooy who works in the Office of the Presidency, whom she admits to know, and who nominated her by giving an address in Groenkloof.  She says she "factually responded" to the Committee that she did "not know a Mr du Plooy from Groenkloof".

She revealed in her letter to the Speaker that "I was contacted telephonically by Mr Louis du Plooy of the Office of the Presidency asking whether I would agree to a nomination and if I would submit my curriculum vitae for consideration for the SABC Board to which I agreed..."

It is clear that the two Mr du Plooys are the same person and that Ms Serobe may have tried to conceal the fact that she was nominated by a person who works in the Office of the Presidency.

Ms Vos, in her letter to the Speaker, alleges that the contents of Ms Serobe's letter substantiate her contention that Ms Serobe may have furnished the Committee with false and/or misleading information.
