IFP Women Go To Court on Mathonsi Abuse

19th November 2009

The IFP Women's Brigade has resolved to go to court to support the alleged victim of abuse, Mrs Rosemary Mathonsi. The Women's Brigade said this in a statement issued today in response to media reports that Mrs. Mathonsi has finally decided to expose the life of abuse under which she has been living at the hands of her husband, Mr. Mbuyiseni Mathonsi who is the KwaZulu-Natal Secretary of the South African Teachers Democratic Union (SADTU). Mrs. Mathonsi has also been granted a court interdict against her husband and their case goes to the Pinetown court on the 1st December.

The Chairperson of the IFP Women's Brigade in eThekwini Mrs Molly Mngadi said:

"It was with shock that we received reports of Mrs. Rosemary Mathonsi's life of abuse allegedly at the hands of her husband, Mr. Mbuyiseni Mathonsi.  What is even more disturbing is that the person implicated as the perpetrator of this abuse is the leader of a Teacher union and an activist who counts himself among the fighters for human rights. Sheer hypocrisy!

"As the IFP Women's Brigade in eThekwini we salute Mrs. Mathonsi for her bravery in coming out and exposing this evil. Her heroic stand should encourage all women who live under such conditions, not to suffer quietly. They must stand up against all forms of abuse regardless of who the perpetrator is.

"As South Africa is about to begin the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse, we call on all women and men of integrity not only to condemn this act, but also to stand with Mrs. Mathonsi when she goes to court on the 1st of December. We as the IFP Women's Brigade will certainly be there on the day."
