The Inkatha Freedom Party contends that the
latest death of a mine worker at the Elandsrand gold mine over
the weekend has once again thrown the spotlight on mine safety
in South Africa.
Harmony announced that this death was caused
by a seismic event at its Elandsrand gold mine near
Carletonville on Saturday. Events over the years have
highlighted the fatal and disastrous consequences of seismic
activity in deep-level underground mining operations.
"The IFP acknowledges that government has made
an effort to review seismic and rockburst safety in South
African gold mines through consultation with various industry
experts, but we believe that not enough has been done. The IFP
remains concerned that mines are not making full use of up to
date technology which could enable them to detect seismic events
before they happen," said Eric Lucas, the IFP's Minerals and
Energy Spokesperson.
The IFP believes that a concerted effort must
be made in 2009 to focus on better managing the risk of seismic
events and rockbursts, so as to create safer working
environments to protect the lives of mine employees.
"As the IFP we are committed to mine safety
and would like to see companies providing real leadership on
this matter in 2009", concluded Lucas.
The IFP conveys its condolences to the family
of the mine worker who died at the Elandsrand gold mine.
