KZN MEC Radebe's Department A Haven Of Nepotism

20 April 2009

The KwaZulu Natal Department of Social Development is a haven of nepotism with MEC Meshack Radebe leading by example. The IFP has established that Radebe has employed three of his children and a niece to senior positions in his department while ensuring that his wife's catering companies get a steady supply of lucrative tenders.

The IFP is aware that the MEC's daughter Nomalungelo Radebe, who only graduated last year, has been appointed a Deputy Director for Development Facilitation. Similarly, Radebe's son Mzomuhle, who previously worked as a driver in his father's department - notably without a driver's license - is now a Deputy Director in the MEC's office. Mzomuhle Radebe does not even have matric.

In addition, the MEC's daughter Nobuhle Radebe has been conveniently employed in the department's Wartburg welfare office. And finally, the MEC's niece Nomonde Radebe has landed a plush job in the department's procurement unit - with level 8 remuneration despite having no previous job experience.

"All these appointments are outrageous instances of nepotism. None of the MEC's children was appointed on merit or has the necessary experience," said IFP spokesperson on welfare Les Govender.

The IFP also wishes to place on record that the MEC's wife Thembi Radebe's three catering companies have been the main beneficiaries of procurement for the department's countless sod-turning functions. The companies are Fresh Colour (no longer trading under that name), Impendulo, and Bheblinbaba (fronted by Thembi Radebe's close friend).

The IFP has previously decried the levels of nepotism and flawed appointment procedures within the ANC-led KwaZulu Natal provincial government. "The KwaZulu Natal provincial government is swarming with ANC cronies, MEC's close relatives and suspect individuals such as Leon Mbangwa, spokesperson in the Department of Health, whom we previously busted as a person with a criminal record," said Govender.

The IFP is determined to crack down on nepotism in the provincial government immediately after the election. "The ANC government has taken the practice of employing relatives to new heights. The good news is that an IFP provincial government will clean up after 22 April," said Govender.
