IFP CALLS FOR URGENT JAILBREAK INVESTIGATION

The IFP's KZN Spokesperson on Safety and Security Dr LPHM Mtshali, MPL, today called for an urgent investigation into the escape of two prisoners sentenced for the murder of Prince Mazwi Zulu, son of Prince GL Zulu, MP, in 2002.

Dr Mtshali aid:

"This is the second time that these two prisoners have managed to escape which indicates quite clearly that they both should have been under close observation and that no leniency should have been allowed to them. There have also been reports that these two men were armed at the time of their escape. This naturally causes great concern. The IFP calls for a full and urgent investigation into this matter and into the entire security situation at Westville Prison."

"This escape highlights one of the fatal flaws in dealing with crime in South Africa. Victims and members of the public fear coming forward with evidence and information because of possible retribution should those convicted as a result of their evidence escape. It is not good enough just to get convictions. The public must be protected from those sentenced. And this starts with better security in prisons."

"The IFP calls for a speedy but thorough investigation so the situation can be redressed and that no escapes will take place in the future. The IFP also calls on members of the public to come forward with any information that will lead to the re-arrest of the escapees. The South African Police will have to do everything in its power to apprehend the escapees in order to keep the public safe from these dangerous men."

"We also call on the South African Police to do everything they can to ensure that the lives of Prince GL Zulu and his family are not in anyway threatened by this escape."
