The IFP maintains that the KwaZulu Natal
provincial government - one of the loudest critics of the
R15-million over-run of His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini's
budget is also one of the reasons for the overspending.
"His Majesty is required to attend
installations of amakhosi but, although a guest, his department
is also required to pay his way," said Sipho Mbatha who
represents the IFP on the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Parliament's
finance committee.
The IFP is referring to the cabinet resolution
that obliges the Department of Royal Household to cover all
expenses incurred by His Majesty and his entourage when
attending the installations of amahkosi organised by the
Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs.
"It is unfair to expect the King to be present
and foot the bill at the same time. A large proportion of
overspending in the Department of Royal Household can be traced
back to these functions," said Mbatha.
