HEFER REPORT RAISES QUESTIONS THAT NEED TO BE ANSWERED SAYS IFP
Durban: 21 January 2004
Mr Bulelani Ngcuka's name has been cleared by Judge Hefer, but important
question marks remain over the conduct of Mr Mo Shaik, Mr Mac Maharaj and Deputy President Jacob Zuma, the IFP spokesperson on
Justice, Mr Koos van der Merwe MP, said today.
Mr Koos van der Merwe said:
"We do not think that President Thabo Mbeki had any alternative than to appoint the Commission. The blame for the waste of taxpayers' money rests on
the shoulders of Mr Shaik and Mr Maharaj, whose irresponsible allegations
were of such a nature that the integrity of the Institution of Public Prosecutions and its incumbent were brought into disrepute."
"Having made irresponsible statements, which have damaged the reputation of
a constitutional institution, the Directorate of Prosecutions, as well as
the integrity of the incumbent Director of Prosecutions, the country would
expect decisive action against Messrs Shaik and Maharaj, whether civil or
criminal."
"The position of Deputy President Zuma is once again under the spotlight.
Having unfairly been informed that there was a prima facie case against him,
but no prosecution, he is saddled with untenable innuendo. He had a chance
to air his case before Judge Hefer."
"This may not have been the ideal forum for Mr Zuma, but it still afforded
him an opportunity to outline his version, however, Mr Zuma's reluctance to
use this opportunity and his implied threat to disobey a subpoena simply
added more question marks about his conduct."
