Intimidation of an IFP Candidate in the Durban Metro Ward 77

21st May 2001

The National Organizer of the IFP, Mr Albert Mncwango, has expressed grave concern at the intimidation of the IFP candidate, Mr F.J. Ngobese in the Durban Metro by-election.

A gang claiming to be ANC supporters stormed Mr F.J. Ngobese's home this morning. After threatening an individual who was in the house, they ransacked the house and proceeded to gain access to Mr Ngobese's bedroom on the pretence of searching for firearms. IFP campaign material was removed and destroyed.

Mr Albert Mncwango sought an assurance from the IEC that the by-election would be free and fair and for the ANC to admit culpability for this incident, or condemn it wholeheartedly.

Furthermore, Mr Mncwango called for a full police and IEC investigation into this matter and asked what actions the IEC would be taking to ensure that this election would be both free and fair.
