SABC Staff being used as a political hit squad

JOHANNESBURG : MAY 23, 1999

The Inkatha Freedom Party today accused the SABC of allowing its staff to be used as a political hit squad against opponents of the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal.

"It has come to our attention that Ms. Gugu Kunene and Siphiwe Maphumulo have been seeking to interview former Self Protection Unit members who are now members of the Defence Force with the intention of getting them to incriminate IFP member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Mr Philip Powell."

"Individuals have informed us that the list of the SPU members had been given to Ms. Kunene by the ANC’s Mr Bheki Cele. Individuals were informed that if they did not agree to speak to the SABC team they could be abducted and forced to reveal details of training done at the Mlaba camp in 1993."

"We find the behaviour of the SABC journalists astounding and a clear indication of their political agenda in support of the African National Congress. We call on the management of the SABC to immediately halt this outrageous behaviour and to conduct an inquiry into the reporters involvement in what clearly appears to be an ANC dirty tricks campaign."
