IFP SUPPORTS CAMPAIGN AGAINST ILLEGAL ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

June 21, 2006

The IFP has thrown its weight behind eThekwini's electricity department's campaign against illegal electrical connections in townships and informal settlements.

Illegal connections in eThekwini Metro's hotspots, such as Hammarsdale, are not only costing the municipality staggering sums of money, but are frequently taking lives of children who are either involved in the illegal activity or happen to be playing with bare electrical wiring.

"Illegal connections have to stop," said IFP leader in eThekwini Metro, Councillor Thembi Nzuza. "We are in full support of this campaign and we hope to boost it with our experience from running municipal services in the rural KwaZulu-Natal."

Councillor Nzuza also said:

"To campaign against illegal electrical connections because they cost money and claim lives is only one part of the story. Illegal connections are closely related to the culture of non-payment for municipal services, which is a surviving relic from the apartheid era. Illegal electrical connections have no place in the new South Africa."
