Decision to dissolve Scorpions reckless and self-serving

Inkatha Freedom Party Statement By:
MR
JH VAN DER MERWE  MP
IFP SPOKESPERSON ON JUSTICE

22 January 20078

IFP spokesperson on Justice, Mr Koos van der Merwe MP today said:

"The decision taken by the ruling party's NEC to dissolve the Scorpions is reckless and self-serving, especially as the ANC has not given convincing practical justification for disbanding the Scorpions."

"The IFP believes that an independent body such as the Scorpions is needed now more than ever in particular to investigate high profile and organised crimes.  This clearly cannot be done by the SAPS as their very own Commissioner is being charged with corruption. It is obvious that the police need policing. Even the Independent Complaints Directorate appears to be powerless."

"The Scorpions have so far done an excellent job and they should be allowed to continue to root out especially high profile and organised crime. It is obvious that the Scorpions have become a thorn in the ANC's side by fearlessly investigating crime even at high levels. For that reason the ruling party wants to get rid them."

"The IFP implores the ANC to rethink their decision. The ANC must realise that the public will not stand for cover-ups any longer.  Now is the time for the ANC to rule in the interest of the people and of justice, and not use their power to protect corrupt Members and loyalists."
