IFP UNDERLINES IT COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENT GOVERNMENT BY
SWIFTLY INTERVENING IN ABAQUBUSI MUNICIPALITY

Durban: 22 August 2003

The IFP has intervened in response to the allegations advanced against Abaqubusi Mayor, Mrs Elsie Moolman, the National Organiser of the Party, Mr Mncwango said today.

Mr Mncwango said:

"The Party intervened after conducting an internal investigation by reprimanding Mrs Mooman and endorsing the decision of the Mayor's Executive Committee that she should repay the monies that was appropriated to transport IFP members to the Party's Annual General Conference. This swift action was taken in line with the Party's clear commitment to transparent government, financial accountability and service delivery."

Mr Mncwango added:

"Though the Party was greatly disappointed and does not condone the Mayor's action, she did not misappropriate the money for self-enrichment."

"Furthermore, the other allegations levelled against the Mayor are without substance."

Mr Mncwango noted that the Abaqubusi Municipality is characterised by high levels of unemployment and poverty amongst the previously disadvantaged.

"This has been considerably worsened by the closure of mines in the area. The merciless spread of HIV/AIDS has ravaged families and communities. After the death of their parents, child-headed families often look to the Municipality for assistance with funeral arrangements. The challenges and difficulties facing the Municipality with limited resources are great."
