The IFP has
been shocked by the violent incident which saw Phumzile
Buthelezi, daughter of IFP President Mangosuthu Buthelezi,
attacked during Taking Parliament to the People in Vryheid.
Ms Buthelezi
was hit on the head with a chair. The tent erupted in angry
protest following the incident.
“We are
mortified to note that an incident of this nature could happen
thirteen years into our democratic dispensation,” said Leader of
the Official Opposition in KwaZulu Natal Dr Lionel Mtshali.
The
initiative of Taking Parliament to the People, consistently
criticised by the IFP as a waste of the taxpayers’ money,
elicited an angry response from the crowd in Vryheid on the
opening day.
“This is
despite the fact that the ANC did its best to bus in its own
supporters as opposed to people of AbaQulusi at large,” said Dr
Mtshali.
