23 March 2009A group of UKZN students
wearing IFP t-shirts was fired at by the SAPS on the Howard
College campus today despite not being involved in the ongoing
SRC strike spearheaded by the ANC-affiliated SASCO.
UKZN's SRC, controlled by SASCO, has
been on strike since last Wednesday in protest against academic
exclusions and inadequate financial aid. The police were called
in by the university authorities to contain the student unrest.
"The IFP Youth Brigade condemns this
blatant example of police brutality meted out randomly at
students who had nothing to do with the student unrest at UKZN,"
said Acting Chairperson of the IFPYB, Pat Lebenya-Ntanzi.
The IFPYB and IFP-affiliated SADESMO
have distanced themselves from all SASCO-led activities on
campus. "As much as we are concerned about academic exclusions
and inadequate financial aid at UKZN, we refuse to take part in
a strike that has fast deteriorated into a pro-Zuma campaign,"
said Lebenya-Ntanzi.
The IFPYB has called on the SAPS to
exercise restraint when dealing with student unrest. "The
indiscriminate use of force by the SAPS on the Howard College
campus is reminiscent of police brutality during apartheid
days," said Lebenya-Ntanzi.
