IFP Wins Critical By-election in Durban Metro

24 May 2007

The IFP National Organiser, Mr Albert Mncwango, today welcomed the results of the by-election in Ward 68 (Durban Metro), which took place yesterday.

Mr Mncwango said:

"The IFP firstly wants to thank all those voters in Ward 68 who came out to support the IFP and its candidate, Mr Ebrahim Shaik. We are very excited about the victory. The result of this by-election goes to prove that the IFP is making inroads into new constituencies, which reflect the diversity of the South African population. "

"This by-election took place at a very critical time in the affairs of Durban Metro. The result of the by-election vindicates the IFP's recent March against ANC arrogance as they try to force the names of their "heroes", without consultation, down the throats of the population of Durban. The people of Ward 68 are clearly saying that they are not prepared to be bullied and will not be swayed by last-minute ANC food vouchers to buy their votes."

"The by-election was heavily contested by all major political parties in South Africa. And in spite of the parade of top leadership by others the IFP won the election because people are now tired of talk and publicity stunts and are now looking for real service delivery."

"Once again, we thank the people of Ward 68 who voted for us and we promise to give all our support to newly-elected Councilor Shaik as he works to bring delivery to the people. This victory coupled with the reclaiming of the Newcastle Municipality has spurred us on to work harder and smarter."
