The Inkatha Freedom Party is encouraged by the
pragmatism of the President's speech, especially in outlining a number of plausible
strategies to tackle the very serious problems that still face the country.
The President rightly highlighted the fight against crime as a key
area that must be tackled. The IFP supports the strategy that he outlined of enhancing the
status of the SAPS so that they become the guarantors of human rights and freedoms.
The IFP was also encouraged that the President committed the
government to implementing the decisions taken at the Jobs Summit and made clear that
promoting job creation would remain a priority of government.
The President's comments on the alleviation of rural poverty are
likewise welcomed by the IFP, particularly his intention to put in place an integrated
rural development strategy and establish a Poverty Alleviation Fund, which could act as a
catalyst for development amongst the poorest of the poor.
It remains to be seen how President Mbeki's declared intention to
resolve all outstanding issues pertaining to traditional leaders will be effected but it
is certainly encouraging that there is a commitment from government to act upon this issue
which has been dragging on since 1994.
The intentions expressed in the President's speech are positive and
deserving of the support of all South Africans. However the real test will lie in whether
the President can actually deliver on these good intentions.
His actions will speak louder than his words.
