GET TOUGH WITH TRAFFIC OFFENDERS, URGES IFP
DURBAN : 25 JULY, 2000
The Inkatha Freedom Party has cautioned that it is no use to introduce tougher traffic
laws unless there is a commitment to enforce them. Reacting to the reported major
changes to the National Road Traffic Act, the IFP Spokesperson on Transport said:
"The IFP welcomes the reported changes to the National Road Traffic Act which
aims at getting tough with traffic offenders. Our roads are famous for being
dangerous and this can no longer be tolerated."
"However, changing and amending laws is of no use unless it is accompanied by
a commitment and a will to enforce them. Time and again, offenders who know
that there is a very little chance that they will be prosecuted, violate our laws with
impunity. The government must ensure that there are enough well equipped
police officers to deal decisively with all offenders. In addition, the courts must be
empowered to deal swiftly and effectively with all cases that are brought to them.
Otherwise, all the amendments are a waste of time."
