IFP URGES FOR INVESTIGATION INTO SELEBI LINKS

May 26, 2006

The IFP spokesperson for Safety & Security, Mr. Velaphi Ndlovu has slammed the comments made by Police National Commissioner, Mr. Jackie Selebi, about the ICD and Scorpions. Mr. Ndlovu expressed that a sense of "conflict of interest" on the side of the National Commissioner is being felt all round.

Mr. Ndlovu said:
"Today's investigative report in the Mail & Guardian shows the linkage and the wide range of interest of the National Commissioner. The IFP recall that when there was a misunderstanding about the security companies at Johannesburg International Airport, the Commissioner showed an interest in the private security companies. Since the strike of the national security companies and workers, the National Commissioner has not said anything against the havoc they are causing. This causes the IFP to suspect that once again the National Commissioner has a vested interest in these matters".

Further Mr. Ndlovu added:
"Unless the National Commissioner proves himself against these beliefs and perceptions, the IFP will hold the National Commissioner responsible to all that is said about him".

Mr. Ndlovu concluded:
"We urge that Presidency, who appointed the Police National Commissioner, to investigate these allegations. This is also a chance for Mr. Selebi to clear his name or resign as Police National Commissioner".
