The public
sector strike is not only inflicting untold damage on the South
African economy, but it is also undermining the country's social
compact, IFP Secretary-General Musa Zondi said today.
The IFP,
whilst supporting the right of public servants to strike and the
principle of collective bargaining, is concerned that the rights
of public sector clients are being eroded.
Musa Zondi
said:
"We are most
concerned about the patients in public hospitals, many of them
terminally ill and vulnerable. Similarly, our thoughts are with
the pupils in public schools whose examinations at such a
crucial time in their schooling have been interrupted by the
striking teachers."
Zondi called
upon the unions and government to redouble their efforts to
bring this dispute to a speedy end and for public servants to
refrain from acts of violence and intimidation.
