The IFP has
noted with dismay recent comments made by the SA Democratic
Teachers' Union (Sadtu) calling for a "political" strike in
support of ANC President Jacob Zuma.
"It seems
like Sadtu is slightly confused about its own objectives and
mandate. As a professional teacher's union, Sadtu's main
function should be that of looking after the professional
interests of its 235 000 members," said Mr Alfred Mpontshane MP,
the IFP's Education Spokesperson.
"This then
begs the question: what has Zuma's political career got to do
with the welfare of our teachers?"
The IFP
argues that as a professional teachers' union, Sadtu, even
though they are affiliated to COSATU should at all times remain
unbiased in their actions as they are also members of Education
International, an organisation that represents nearly 30 million
teachers and education workers worldwide.
Mr
Mpontshane continued: "How can we entrust Sadtu with the future
of our children when they have for all intents and purposes
abandoned their professional mandate by calling for a political
strike to support Zuma?
"The IFP
believes that teachers should be more concerned about the
quality of education; the high drop-out rate among learners and
the number of teaching days lost due to previous strikes.
In
conclusion Mr Mpontshane said: "Sadtu members teach children
from a diverse political background and we therefore reject
Sadtu's political statements as irresponsible and
unprofessional. Let those who teach, teach and leave party
politics to the politicians."
