Umvoti Police Must Arrest Perpetrators of Violence

26th November 2009

Inkatha Freedom Party says that the recently-achieved uMvoti peace will fail unless the police are brave enough to carry out arrests of all those implicated in its perpetration. This was said today by the IFP MPL Mr. Blessed Gwala at the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature during the Community Safety Debate.  "What is left now is for the police to be seen to playing their role in restoring law and order in uMvoti without fear or favour. We call on the police not to hesitate to deal with and arrest anyone who is involved or implicated in the perpetration of violence in uMvoti, regardless of who that person is or whether or not he or she is a political heavyweight," said Gwala.

Gwala lamented the fact that "enmity, intolerance and violence between the ANC and the IFP have lived for decades and refuse to die after fifteen years of the democratic dispensation." He however expressed hope that the uMvoti initiative was one step towards the consummation of reconciliation between the two organizations:

"We in the IFP are ready to take part in any forum whose objective is to bring about reconciliation and coexistence within our communities. To the IFP, the respect for human lives is more than just a constitutional matter. To us, it is a moral obligation. This is why we have an unwavering commitment to the success of any initiative and to the achievement of the long-overdue reconciliation between the ANC and the IFP at all levels and, in particular, at the level of the national leadership. Let me hasten to add, Madam Speaker, that when I talk about reconciliation between the ANC and IFP, I am not at all talking about a merger," Gwala concluded.
