IFP Condemns Taxi Violence

October 27, 2006

STATEMENT ISSUED BY:
MR VELAPHI NDLOVU
IFP SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

The Inkatha Freedom Party's Spokesperson for Safety and Security, Mr Velaphi Ndlovu MP, today strongly condemned the reckless and lawless action displayed by striking taxi drivers in Cape Town yesterday.

"The numerous stonings, as well as the burning and hijacking of busses show us that these louts do not have any regard for the rule of law, " said Mr Ndlovu.

"The mayhem and chaos had a severe impact on the economy yesterday, because many commuters, who rely on taxis to get to and from work, were not able to do so. And those wanting to make use of other transport had to deal with stonings and victimization.

In conclusion Mr Ndlovu said: "The IFP would like to congratulate the South African Police Force and the Cape Metro Police for acting swiftly in dealing with the unruly protesters, and hope that strike action planned in Gauteng today will not amount to the disorder and pandemonium we had in the Western Cape yesterday".
