IFP Supports DA Candidates for Parliamentary
Posts
November 27, 2006
The IFP supports in principle the DA’s decision to put up
candidates for the positions of Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chair
of Committees in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Parliament.
The two positions were granted to the IFP in the wake of the
2004 elections. The party has since been steadily pushed
out of all provincial government and parliamentary posts in
KwaZulu-Natal.
“The way the ruling party has monopolised the executive branch
of government is understandable. The way it has monopolised
Parliament is deplorable. Parliament belongs to all
parties of which it is composed,” said Leader of the Official
Opposition in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Parliament, Dr Lionel
Mtshali.
“By supporting the DA’s claim as an opposition party to
participate in the parliamentary hierarchy, the IFP has
demonstrated its deeply felt respect for plurality and
democratic representivity. We will support the DA candidates in
Parliament on this basis,” said Dr Mtshali.
