STATEMENT BY MANGOSUTHU BUTHELEZI
- THE REVIEW TRIUMVIRATE:
A PERFORMANCE REVIEW MECHANISM FOR PUBLIC REPRESENTATIVES
April 28, 2005
Statement by Prince
Mangosuthu Buthelezi
President of the Inkatha Freedom Party
THE REVIEW TRIUMVIRATE: A PERFORMANCE REVIEW MECHANISM FOR
PUBLIC REPRESENTATIVES
In response to media enquires, I must
express my dismay at the leaking of the deliberations of our
last National council. It is unwarranted to characterise the
Review Triumvirate as a plan to "purge" serving IFP
public representatives, particularly members of Parliament.
The body's establishment is nothing more
than part and parcel of the commitment made at our last Annual
General Conference to renew and rejuvenate the Party. It is also
an essential expression of the commitment we made to the
electorate.
For instance, all IFP local government
councils adopted a performance pledge. As a Party, we must
monitor the implementation of this pledge.
It is irresponsible for certain members of
the National Council to leak this information to the press,
which one fears is on account of them not having a clear
conscience. The terms of the Review make it clear that there is
nothing sinister about it. Other political parties have
undertaken this exercise without attracting public attention.
In respect of each elected representative,
the Triumvirate shall investigate and assess:
a. The political relevance of his or her
parliamentary activities; and
b. The public relevance of his or her
parliamentary activities; and
c. Constituency work performed; and
d. Advocacy of constituents in parliament;
and
e. Party work performed; and
f. Party discipline and loyalty; and
g. Fundraising efforts; and
h. Capacity and willingness to complete
his or her term of office with continuous dedicated, effective
and unhindered work.
