IFP
CHIEF WHIP AND SPOKESPERSON ON JUSTICE

28th May 2008

The Inkatha Freedom Party would like to record its disappointment with this morning's removal of the Scorpions case from the Pretoria High Court roll, said the IFP's Chief Whip and Justice Spokesperson, Mr Koos van der Merwe MP.

The IFP had joined several other opposition parties as an amicus curiae in support of Hugh Glenister's application to stop the disbandment of the Scorpions.

Mr van der Merwe said: "Having studied the judge's ruling, we cannot fault his legal finding - but it only means that we will now have to find an alternative way to stop government from disbanding the Scorpions.

"The IFP remains vehemently opposed to the disbandment of the Scorpions because, in its current form, it is an irreplaceable and very successful element in the fight against crime."

In conclusion Mr van der Merwe said: "The IFP, united with other opposition parties, will continue to oppose the ANC's abuse of power and subversion of democracy in South Africa. We would encourage Mr Glenister to look at all the options available to him and to take his fight to the Constitutional Court if need be."
