Shilowa Latest Victim of ANC Leadership Battle

29th September 2008

The IFP in Gauteng has taken note of the untimely resignation of Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa today.

"The IFP pays tribute to Mr Shilowa for his hard work and dedication to the economic development of Gauteng, but his resignation comes as no surprise to us," commented Mr Bonginkosi Dhlamini, the IFP Gauteng spokesperson.

"Being a loyal Thabo Mbeki supporter, Mr Shilowa is just another fatality in the ongoing political crisis that has dominated the ruling party.

Speculation that he is among those planning a new break-away party is probably what sealed his fate with the new ANC leadership.

"In the interest of the province and the people of Gauteng, the IFP hopes that the ANC provincial leadership will appoint a new Premier as a matter of urgency and that the transition in leadership will not derail the political and economic stability of the province.

"Furthermore, we wish Mr Shilowa all the best in his future endeavours.

Hopefully his immeasurable political experience and leadership skills will not be lost to Gauteng and we hope that he will remain actively involved in politics," concluded Mr Dhlamini.
