MJWARA'S SUDDEN RESIGNATION SUSPICIOUS
30 April 2007
The IFP has expressed concern about today's resignation of the embattled Head of Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs (DAEA), Dr Jabulani Mjwara.
"The sudden resignation of the Accounting Officer, following the resignation of the Chief Financial Officer Petrus Mahlangu, raises suspicion. Is this not an attempt to evade internal disciplinary action in the department brought to its knees by Dr Mjwara's mismanagement?" - said Leader of the Official Opposition in the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Parliament Dr Lionel Mtshali MPP.
The IFP notes that the timing of the announcement of the HoD's resignation coincides with the budget debate on the DAEA.
"This leaves a sour taste when we consider that the forensic audit report on the extent of the departmental mismanagement will only be tabled at the end of May," said Dr Mtshali.
The IFP objected to the fact that Dr Mjwara had not been suspended during the internal audit in the department and, as a result, might have had countless opportunities to influence the process.
"His sudden departure now, that his condemnation is likely to be intensified by the forensic audit report, suggests that he may be running away from responsibility," said Dr Mtshali.
