Somalian refugee attacks shameful
August 30, 2006
STATEMENT ISSUED BY:
MR. VELAPHI NDLOVU
IFP SPOKESPERSON FOR SAFETY & SECURITY
Mr. Velaphi Ndlovu, the IFP spokesperson for Safety and
Security, expressed concern regarding the current spate of
attacks on Somalian refugees.
Mr. Ndlovu said: "The IFP has learnt with regret of the recent
spate of attacks on Somali refugees in the Cape Town area. We
are saddened by the rise of violence towards the community, and
express our sympathies to them."
Mr. Ndlovu added: "We, the IFP, would like to implore the
Provincial Commissioner of Police, Mzwandile Petros, to
investigate these violent attacks thoroughly and bring to book
those responsible. It is reported that two suspects have been
arrested for the robberies and attacks, and will be appearing in
court soon. We applaud the speed with which the arrests have
been made, and hope that justice will come quickly. However, it
is with great concern the IFP notes that no arrest for any of
the murders has taken place yet."
In conclusion, Mr. Ndlovu said: "The IFP calls on the Minister
of Safety and Security to launch a full investigation into the
murders of 27 Somalian refugees. We find it inexcusable that 27
murders had to take place before the attacks and murders were
acknowledged as xenophobic by the Community Safety MEC, Leonard
Ramatlakane."
