IFP WALKS OUT OF ETHEKWINI COUNCIL
October 30, 2006
The IFP has walked out of an eThekwini Council meeting in
protest against the ruling party’s decision to subsidise Durban
Transport.
Durban Transport, which has recently sustained damages –
possibly through arson, is now a private entity. “As such, it is
not entitled to a council subsidy made up of taxpayers’ money,”
said Councillor Thembi Nzuza who leads the IFP in eThekwini
Council.
The R20-million earmarked by the ANC as a subsidy for Durban
Transport is to be drawn from rates penalties. “This is totally
unfair to Durban ratepayers and totally unacceptable to the
IFP,” said Councillor Nzuza.
“This amount would effectively pay for as many as 565 RDP
houses. Only when everyone in Durban has a home and there are no
street children on our streets, will we consider subsidising
private enterprise,” said Councillor Nzuza.
The IFP has opposed the intention to bail out Durban Transport
on principle. A more correct procedure for the company would
have been to apply for a subsidy from the national Department of
Transport.
