TSHWETE WARNED 'STOP POINTING FINGERS: START TAKING ACTION'

DURBAN :  31 August, 2000

In the wake of the latest bombing outrage in Cape Town, Inkatha Freedom Party Safety and Security Spokesperson, Velaphi Ndlovu MP has warned Minister of Safety and Security, Steve Tshwete, to stop pointing fingers and start taking action to end the bombing campaign.

Mr Ndlovu said:

"Minister Tshwete has once again chosen to blame PAGAD for the latest bombing incident in Cape Town. We must warn Minister Tshwete, that it is time to stop pointing fingers and to start taking action."

"If PAGAD are truly involved, then the South African public has the right to ask the following questions: Why has PAGAD not been thoroughly infiltrated by the security forces by now? Why have there been no convictions of PAGAD members, directly related to any of nineteen bombs that have exploded in the Cape since 1998? And; why does the Minister believe that consistently blaming PAGAD without taking decisive action against them will bring any comfort to the innocent victims of these terrible outrages?"

"If Minister Tshwete really does have evidence that PAGAD are involved in the bombings, he must place that evidence before Parliament and we will then happily work with him to ensure that the security forces have the necessary powers to close down PAGAD. If Minister Tshwete does not have any such evidence, then he and his Department should stop pointing fingers and get down to doing their job by bringing to justice the actual perpetrators of these cowardly attacks."
