National
Assembly Cape Town: 20 June 2007
I move that the House:
(1) notes a letter in the
Sunday Tribune of June 17 2007 titled, 'Song brings back toilet
memories', which reported that striking teachers, nurses and
municipal workers chanted an abusive and derogatory song about
President Thabo Mbeki;
(2) condemns such
displays of vulgarity against the Head of State, which exceeds the
right of peaceful demonstration as they impugn the dignity and
reputation of the Head of State;
(3) resolves that whilst
respecting the right of public servants to strike, they should
refrain from such uncouth behaviour; and
(4) notes that such
behaviour provides evidence of the need to separate the offices of
the Head of State and Head of Government forthwith as spelled out in
the 18th Constitutional Amendment Bill. |
