MEMBER'S STATEMENT TO THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
by MR MABALANA SIBUYANA MP

Attack on Prosecutor

National Assembly: 21 September 2006

Madame Speaker,

According to the crime statistics about 20 000 people are killed every year.
Crime has reached alarming proportions nationally. The Pretoria court recently said in no uncertain terms, that the courts were fed up with the disregard criminals had for the life of innocent people.

However, despite the court's remarks and just after the release of the shocking national statistics on crime, a prosecutor was attacked while in her court office in Pretoria. It is reported that she has been stabbed ten times by the attacker, who was out on bail on an unrelated murder case, tried to rob the prosecutor of her cell phone.

Increasingly worse is that her attacker has been caught several times stealing cell phones but police allegedly always let him go. It is also not known how the suspect has entered the building with a knife despite the use of metal detector at the entrance.

It is therefore increasingly critical that the department of safety and security tightens up it's security measures, it is sad and remarkable that a prosecutor could be stabbed several times while in her office.

I thank you
