Koos Congratulates Speaker & Takes Another Cake Into the House

Speech by Mr Koos van der Merwe MP

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY : 25th September 2008

Madame Speaker,

The IFP wishes to congratulate you on your election as Speaker.

We have worked together since you were elected to Parliament in 1994. We have served together on many Parliamentary Committees.

We have also served together in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Union as well as the International Parliamentary Union attending international conferences in countries such as Cuba, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Bali, Jakarta and others.

In those very challenging sessions, Madame Speaker, your stature grew over the years. You started to play a leading role and eventually served at a high level, bringing much praise for South Africa.

Your elevation to the position of Deputy Speaker came as no surprise to those who know you well. You excelled and served Parliament with distinction.

You now occupy the Chair in our House. This, also, came as no surprise, because you earned that high position.

You have the experience, the talents and the dedication needed.

Madame Speaker, you should always remember one big truth: The Speaker is not the Speaker of the ruling party. You are the Speaker of the National Assembly and one of your main duties is to protect smaller parties.

Madame Speaker, we have discussed the possibility of celebrating your election by bringing you a cake. But I wasn't prepared to run that risk again.

So, Madame a cake will be delivered to your office tomorrow morning. Please do not chase the messenger out and enjoy the cake.

We wish you well.
