Corruption in Correctional Services Poses Huge Threat

1 February 2012

The IFP said that it has taken note of the arrest of a correctional services warden, for allegedly assisting convicted fraudster Dennis Subramoney to escape from the King Edward Hospital in KwaZulu Natal.

"In spite of numerous seminars, new policies and plans, corruption has become endemic within the Department of Correctional Services. This latest incident is proof that the rot runs very deep in this Department," said Velaphi Ndlovu MP, the IFP's spokesperson on Correctional Services.

Ndlovu said that the ethical degeneration within the Department of Correctional Services was of great concern to the IFP. "This year, we must do our utmost to ensure that we expose and eliminate the corrupt individuals and practices within the Department," said Ndlovu.

The IFP said it believed that alongside the many successes of the country's transformation, ran a parallel story of deepening corruption, which is threatening the future of our country's democracy.

"The IFP stands for a universal crackdown on all instances of corruption which must be exposed and punished harshly. We hope that Correctional Services Department has suspended the individual who is alleged to be involved in the escape of Mr Subramoney. A clear message must be sent that corruption will no longer be tolerated."
