The IFP-aligned South African Democratic
Students Organisation (Sadesmo) has take note of the decision by the
University of Free State's new rector, Jonathan Jansen, that the
university was withdrawing disciplinary charges against the
so-called Reitz-4 as a gesture of reconciliation.
"The situation at UFS is of absolute concern
to Sadesmo because it further highlights a South Africa that
remains racially divided," said Mkhuleko Hlengwa, Sadesmo
National Spokesperson today.
Hlengwa said that while Professor Jansen's
statements bear some merit, Sadesmo believes that Jansen should
have consulted with all the relevant parties first.
"Despite the upset caused by Jansen's decision
- Sadesmo views this as an opportunity for revival of the
reconciliation debate. It is evident that many South Africans
still centre their thinking and behaviour around race and
apartheid," said Hlengwa.
Hlengwa added: "The issues of race and
reconciliation have not been adequately dealt with, because the
TRC failed in its task of achieving reconciliation and unity."
Sadesmo believes it is now the collective duty
of all South Africans to rise above petty politics and
objectively engage in the racial debate, in the hope that
reconciliation and unity in diversity can be revived and
maintained.
"Reconciliation must be viewed as a continuous
process, which will bring South Africans together. Sadesmo
maintains that 'Education for Liberation' remains our
philosophy; and it is through education that racism can be dealt
with," said Hlengwa.
Sadesmo will be communicating its views on
this matter to Professor Jansen and the University in due
course.
Hlengwa concluded: "We wish all UFS students
well in their exams, and hope that their hard work will pay off.
We will be closely monitoring the situation at the UFS and we
will encourage objective and constructive dialogue in the
interests of nation building."
