The South African Democratic Students Movement
(Sadesmo) has noted with concern the escalating number of
unemployed graduates and wishes to state categorically that we
believe institutions must take responsibility for their
graduates.
"We demand that all tertiary institutions put
in place proper exit plans for their graduates. Students study
and graduate, yet thereafter they become mere statistics as they
join the unemployed lines," said Ntuthuko Majozi, SADESMO
President.
SADESMO argues that Government's initiatives,
like the Unemployed Graduates Placement Initiative, are not
yielding any results in addressing the problem.
"It is clear that Government initiatives are
ineffective; which is caused by the lack of proper facilitation.
We therefore request that our institutions facilitate the
placement of graduates in terms of liaising with private
companies and Government Departments in order to make these
initiatives effective," said Majozi
He added: "SADESMO believes that institutions
should be more involved in marketing their graduates with
employers and create opportunities for them."
