The IFP-aligned South African Democratic
Students Movement (SADESMO) has pleaded with parents to exercise
restraint when disciplining their children.
SADESMO was reacting following the death of
Nonkululeko Dlangisa, 17, of Hillgrove Secondary School,
Newlands West, KwaZulu Natal.
"It is SADESMO's belief that parents have the
right to discipline their children; but we plead with parents
not to resort to abusive methods when disciplining their
children," said SADESMO National Spokesperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa.
It is alleged that Dlangisa's uncle beat her
with an electric cord after receiving reports from teachers that
Dlangisa misbehaved at school.
"We cannot ignore the fact that South Africa
is in a moral crisis and in general, bad behaviour has reached
undesirable levels. Discipline is needed; however we cannot
allow a situation where violence and abuse are used to achieve
discipline.
"There is a need for teachers and parents to
work hand-in-hand to ensure that pupils behave. The pursuit of
generally well-behaved learners and students should be a
societal duty, and parents should not be afraid to discipline
their children should the need arise.
Similarly, we maintain that discipline can be
instilled without violent means.
"SADESMO calls for a full investigation into
this unfortunate incident and we hope that those found guilty
will face the full brunt of the law," said Hlengwa.
In conclusion Hlengwa said: "On behalf of
SADESMO I wish to offer our most sincere condolences to the
Dlangisa family and to the learners and staff of Hillgrove
Secondary school. May Nonkululeko rest in peace."
