The South African Democratic Students Movement
(SADESMO) has demanded the Department of Basic Education
implement free education from grade 1 to grade 12.
"We demand free education from grade 1 to
grade 12. We are
fully aware of government's NO-FEE SCHOOLS but we strongly
believe that the initiative does not address the issue of access
to education for all," said Ntuthuko Majozi, SADESMO President
during the launch of Operation Siyabahlangabeza in SOWETO on the
5th of June 2010.
He continued: "We will not rest until our
demands are met. The
South African Constitution provides for free basic education. We
have waited patiently from 1994 but nothing has happened on that
score. We will be silent no longer. SADESMO will champion this
cause. And we will emerge victorious."
SADESMO is arranging a meeting with the
Minister of Basic Education to discuss this issue and other
issues that affects basic education.
"We are trying to secure a meeting with the
Minister immediately after the FIFA World Cup to discuss this
matter and other issues such as making the Drivers License part
of Secondary education curriculum," concluded Majozi.
